IBM Broadens 5G Deals With Telefonica And Verizon With Cloud And Artificial Intelligence

IBM Broadens 5G Deals With Telefonica And Verizon With Cloud And Artificial Intelligence

International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) announced on Monday that it intends to provide telecom operators Telefonica and Verizon a new 5G service over a cloud platform for the utilization of synthetic intelligence.

Industry leading players like Microsoft and Amazon are contending for a share of 5G revenue by offering telecom operators advanced technological solutions. IBM, in the recent past, acquired a software enterprise RedHat, whose platform the company will use to provide cloud based services to the telecom operators, which would assist them to offer personalized customer support.

No monetary terms had been disclosed concerning the collaboration, which broadened IBM’s present partnerships with the two telecom companies. A cloud platform uses software instead of physical equipment to carry out network functions, aiding telecom operators to build 5G networks faster and sell customized services in a cost effective manner.

Darell Jordan, Vice President of RedHat, told Reuters, “It’s a disruptive time in this particular market segment, telecom companies are trying to position themselves as the destination for services like augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.”

IBM and Telefonica have developed a digital assistant using artificial intelligence that would eliminate friction points, such as long wait times, by automating the handling of frequently asked questions and operations like billing.

Steve Canepa, General Manager for communications and business at IBM, said that they firmly believe that this is an existential moment for the telecom industry as the companies are planning to gain more control over their platforms and redesign their infrastructure in a digital world rather than structured physical models.

Google Announces New Cloud TPU VMs For AI Workloads

google cloud TPU

Google announced their new cloud TPU VMs that will authorise companies to supply instances with Tensor Processing Units (TPU). Virtual machines (VM) will offer enterprises a new and advanced user experience to develop and deploy TensorFlow, PyTorch, and JAX on Cloud TPUs.

The Cloud TPUs need not be accessed remotely over the network, rather the virtual machines can be set up in an interactive development environment on each TPU host. For example, now machine learning models can be debugged line by line using a single TPU VM and later be scaled up on a superfast Cloud TPU Pod slice to take advantage of the TPU interconnect.

The users will have access to every TPU VM created by them at all times and can run any code in a tight loop with TPU accelerators. In addition, local storage can be used to execute custom code in input pipelines and easy integration of Cloud TPUs into production workflows.

The Cloud TPU VMs are available in two variants — Cloud TPU v2, which is based on the second-generation TPU chipsets, and the new Cloud TPU v3 based on third-generation TPU. According to Google Cloud, the significant difference between both is in the performance factor. While the Cloud TPU v2 can perform up to 180 teraflops, the TPU v3 up to 420 teraflops. Both variants can be used to perform tasks such as artificial intelligence-powered healthcare analytics and quantum chemistry.

The new TPU system is built in a much simpler and flexible way to achieve performance gains. As the code need not make round trips in the data center network to reach the TPUs the overall efficiency is improved. It is also cost-efficient as the data processing can run directly on the Cloud TPU hosts and eliminates the need for additional Compute Engine VMs.

Artificial Intelligence Powered Digital Assistant Is Modernizing Latin America’s Mining Industry

Artificial Intelligence Powered Digital Assistant Is Modernizing Latin America’s Mining Industry

According to recent research, an artificial intelligence powered digital assistant is modernizing Latin America’s mining industry. The assistant has been developed by a Chilean startup InDiMin. The unique platform provides real time feedback on processes, predicts events, and suggests possible improvement opportunities at mine sites.

Co-founder of InDiMin, Loreto Acevedo said, “I believe Latin America has incredible human resource, mining knowledge and a unique diversity, which means that it also has the capability to foster real, radical change.” She further added that her enterprise’s  product has played a major role in the modernization of mine sites like Chile’s Los Colorados iron mine.

The first prototype of this platform was released in 2013 which was developed by Acevedo and her partner Alvaro Diaz. The duo interviewed a number of people at medium and large mine sites to understand their requirements and to find out what more can be done with technology to further modernize the industry.
