More than 1 million people registered to try Microsoft’s tool in the first 48 hours during last week’s chatbot buzz, when Microsoft and Google competed to showcase the earliest iterations of their artificial intelligence-powered search.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated to CNBC that the technology was “maybe the industrial revolution brought to knowledge work” since it can give out full responses that appear to have been authored by a human. The AI, though, leaves a lot to be desired in terms of precision.

In a demonstration for journalists, Microsoft’s Bing search engine’s ChatGPT-like technology examined financial reports from Gap and Lululemon. The chatbot underreported some figures when comparing its responses to the actual reports. Others seem to be fabrications.

“During the demo, Bing AI provided some utterly incorrect replies. But nobody paid attention,” independent search researcher Dmitri Brereton stated in a Monday Substack article. As an alternative, “everyone boarded the Bing hype train.”

Brereton noted potential factual problems in the Microsoft demo, in addition to the financial mistakes, in its comments regarding the vacuum cleaner specifications and travel arrangements to Mexico. When he looked more closely to write a comparison of the AI announcements from Google and Microsoft, he said he wasn’t originally looking for faults

A summit on the “responsible” use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the military will be held in the Netherlands this week, and it will feature representatives from both the United States and China.

The conference takes place at a time when interest in AI in general is at an all-time high due to the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT programme two months ago, even though it is unclear whether the 50 countries in attendance will agree to endorse even a weak statement of principles being drafted by the Netherlands and co-host South Korea.

We’re taking the first step in describing and working towards what responsible use of AI in the military will entail, said Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra.

The gathering might be the first step in eventually creating a global AI weaponry pact, albeit that is still a long way off. Leaders have been hesitant to yet to agree to any restrictions on its usage out of concern that doing so could put them at a disadvantage.

Alongside the summit, 2,000 specialists and academics are in attendance at a conference where themes like slaughterbots and killer drones will be discussed. In a presentation on Thursday, the U.S. Department of Defense will go over areas where it sees possibilities for international collaboration.

A representative of the Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands cited a position paper in which China stressed the importance of preventing “strategic miscalculations” with AI and making sure it doesn’t unintentionally worsen a conflict.

Odisha police to use AI search engine to gather data

The Odisha police will create an artificial intelligence (AI)-based search engine to assist the investigating officers in quickly obtaining information on crimes, criminals, and their tactics in order to leverage advanced data analytics in investigating crime.

The AI-based search engine can give police quick access to information on subjects like the total number of robberies reported along a specific stretch of highway, whether a suspect or accused has ever been detained in connection with other crimes or has previously engaged in similar behavior, the locations where ATM theft, snatching, and harassment incidents peaked during the holiday season, and more.

By matching the words entered into the AI search engine, the technology can immediately provide numerous potential names of the accused or suspects based on phonetics. “For instance, if an accused person’s name appears in the FIR as Akhaya Das, the search engine will show both that name and those spelled differently, such as Akshaya Dash and Akhay Das, if entered differently,” the police officer continued.

In Odisha, more than 600 police stations have been connected to the CCTNS database. The database makes it easier for police facilities across the nation to communicate and share information, automate and digitize FIRs, improve law and order and traffic management, and follow the status of investigations and legal proceedings.

When an AI agent successfully piloted a USAF Lockheed Martin VISTA X-62A training aircraft for more than 17 hours, it set a new record for the aviation sector. This ground-breaking accomplishment constitutes a significant development in the field of autonomous aviation.

US Air Force Test Pilot School director of research Dr. M. Christopher Cotting said, “VISTA will allow us to parallelize the development and test of cutting-edge artificial intelligence techniques with new uncrewed vehicle designs. This approach, combined with focused testing on new vehicle systems as they are produced, will rapidly mature autonomy for uncrewed platforms and allow us to deliver tactically relevant capability to our warfighter.”
