Andrej Karpathy, former Tesla AI Director, has declared his return to OpenAI, an AI company that Elon Musk co-founded in 2015. Karpathy posted on his own Twitter account about his decision to rejoin OpenAI.
“Some personal news: I am joining OpenAI (again :)). Like many others both in/out of AI, I am very inspired by the impact of their work and I have personally benefited greatly from it. The future potential is especially exciting; it is a great pleasure to jump back in and build!” Karpathy wrote.
Prior to joining Tesla, Karpathy was already well-known as a deep learning expert who collaborated on multiple papers with prominent AI researchers including Andrew Ng, the former head of Google’s AI division, and Fei-Fei Li, the director of Stanford’s computer vision lab.

The majority of Karpathy’s work was focused on image perception and identification, which were essential for Tesla’s self-driving initiatives.
Despite having already left Tesla, Karpathy still seems to have a good relationship with the company’s leadership and electric vehicle manufacturer. Karpathy expressed his admiration for the EV manufacturer during a guest appearance on Lex Fridman’s programme. He also hinted at his future comeback to Tesla.
