GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke will step down by the end of 2025 to launch a new startup, marking a return to his entrepreneurial roots. In a company-wide blog post, Dohmke explained, “I’ve decided to leave GitHub to become a founder again,” citing his startup origins as the catalyst for his decision. His departure comes as GitHub is in a phase of peak strength—now serving over 150 million developers across more than one billion repositories and forks.
During his tenure, Dohmke oversaw GitHub’s expansion into AI-powered developer tools. This includes major milestones like FedRAMP certification, global growth, and a doubling of AI-driven projects on the platform. His own reflection likened GitHub Copilot’s impact on software development to the revolutionary advent of the personal computer.
Microsoft will not appoint a new CEO. Instead, it will fully integrate GitHub’s leadership under its CoreAI team, spearheaded by Jay Parikh. GitHub will now align more closely with Microsoft’s broader AI and developer tool strategy. Dohmke affirmed he will stay on through the end of the year to guide the transition.
