In an interview, Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet and Google, stated that the push to use artificial intelligence technology needed to be carefully regulated to prevent any negative consequences.
When asked what about AI keeps him up at night, Pichai responded, “The urgency to work and deploy it in a beneficial way.” He added, “But at the same time, it can be very harmful if deployed wrongly.”
“Technology is advancing quickly, and we don’t yet have all the answers,” said Pichai. “Does that keep you up at night, then? Absolutely.”

One of the dangers of generative AI that Pichai addressed is the possibility of so-called deepfake videos, in which people can appear to make statements that they did not actually make. Such pitfalls highlight the necessity of regulation, according to Pichai.
Pichai stated that there must be penalties for making deepfake videos that are detrimental to society. He added that anyone who has worked with AI for some time is aware that it is something so unique and complex that social regulations are needed to consider how to adapt.
Google is striving hard in its efforts to include generative AI—software that can generate text, images, music, and even video—into its products. The promise of the technology is being demonstrated by ChatGPT and another OpenAI product, like Dall-E, and now a plethora of other companies. From Silicon Valley to China’s internet leaders, all are participating in the presentation of their own products.
Recently, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt urged international IT firms to band together and create guidelines and safety nets, stating that any halt in progress would simply benefit China.
