The Wall Street Journal reports that Elon Musk has launched a brand-new artificial intelligence company called X.AI. Jared Birchall, the director of Musk’s family office, is listed as the company’s secretary, and Musk is now designated as the company’s director. The business was incorporated last month on March 9, 2023, according to a Nevada signing-up.
For days, there have been rumors that Musk is starting an AI company. According to a Business Insider story, Musk reportedly purchased tens of thousands of graphic processing units (GPUs) to assist an upcoming generative AI product.
Musk allegedly intended to launch an AI business to compete with Microsoft-backed OpenAI, according to The Financial Times. Musk reportedly even solicited SpaceX and Tesla investors for funding to start the company.

When asked about all the GPUs he had purchased, Musk declined to share his plans to create an AI company, responding instead that “it seems like everyone and their dog is buying GPUs at this point.” The branding of the purported X.AI name is similar to that of the X Corp. name he eventually gave to Twitter and the “X” prefix he gave to his idea of an “everything app.”
In a recent letter, Musk called for a halt to “giant AI experiments.” Musk was vehemently opposed to OpenAI, which he co-founded in 2015 but quit in 2018. Recently, OpenAI has attracted a lot of attention. The recent push by Google and Microsoft to more fully integrate AI tools into many of their businesses can also be partially attributed to this.
