The Bombay High Court has granted interim relief to the singer Arijit Singh in his copyright lawsuit against artificial intelligence malpractice in copying his voice.

Following the interim relief, HC issued a strict order restricting AI platforms from using an artist’s name, voice, images, and signature without explicit permission.

Justice Rl Chagla stated, “Making AI tools available to enable conversion of any voice into that of celebrity without his/her permission constitutes a violation of celebrity’s personality rights.”

While AI offers various benefits, some individuals use it for malicious purposes, creating fake recordings and videos using the artist's identity. This can economically harm the creator's career.

Beyond AI, a pub in Bangalore, used Arijit’s popularity to promote events without authorization. On another occasion, someone unauthorizedly used his photos to sell merchandise online.

Arijit’s lawyer argued that unauthorized sharing of his performance or personal traits could harm his reputation and moral rights under section 38-B of the Copyright Act, 1957.
