Amazon launched Rufus, an AI shopping assistant, in August 2024 to improve online shopping experience. Currently, it is available in beta version for some Android and iOS users.

Rufus can make personalized product recommendations to Amazon customers by allowing them to ask suggestions and follow-up questions. It also lists products according to users’ choices.

Customers can access Rufus by tapping its icon at the bottom of the app’s interface. The model searches and compares different products to give exact suggestions as output.

Rufus is trained on customer datasets containing data on product catalogs and customer feedback. It also provides occasion-specific suggestions using its knowledge of Indian brands.

At launch, Amazon stated, “It is still early days for generative AI, and technology won’t always get it right. We will continuously improve Rufus’s responses.”

Alexa, Amazon's AI voice assistant, is already used for smart home control and entertainment. However, Rufus is specially designed to assist with shopping.
